Diaspora Group to Tinubu: Democracy Gasping for Air in Rivers State
Nigerians in the Diaspora Movement for Democracy has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to safeguard democratic principles in Nigeria, expressing deep concern over recent political actions in Rivers State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a strongly worded open letter, the group criticized the President’s decision to impose emergency rule and suspend the elected Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly for six months. The group described these actions as clear signs of democratic backsliding.
Signed by Dr. Samson Idoko (President) and Patriot John Andrew Onuh (Secretary General), the letter urges President Tinubu to reconsider the emergency declaration, arguing that legislative channels should be used instead to resolve the ongoing political impasse in Rivers.
The group proposed firm measures to deter future political unrest, including a 10-year ban from political office or participation for those found inciting conflict. They emphasized that upholding democratic values is not only critical for national stability but also for protecting Tinubu’s own democratic legacy.
According to the letter, “Democracy in Nigeria is under severe pressure, and if not addressed swiftly, the nation could face a full democratic breakdown.”
They warned that the move contradicts what President Tinubu has long stood for and risks tarnishing his leadership history. The group passionately urged the President to uphold the rule of law, protect elected mandates, and restore public trust through transparent democratic processes.
