Healthcare System Failure Forces Terminally Ill Nigerians to Beg for Life-saving Treatment

Published

on

As Nigeria grapples with a growing economic crisis, the healthcare system continues to fail many citizens, leaving them to resort to begging in public places for financial help. Terminally ill patients, including those suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other life-threatening conditions, are increasingly seen on the streets, markets, and bus stops in cities like Lagos, seeking assistance to afford treatment.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The situation highlights the severe inadequacies in Nigeria’s healthcare system. The lack of government support, financial assistance, and social welfare programs has left these vulnerable individuals to fend for themselves. With high treatment costs and limited access to medical care, many families find themselves unable to provide the necessary care for their loved ones, resorting to begging as a last resort.

Medical experts have noted that the rise in terminal diseases is linked to poor lifestyle choices, lack of regular checkups, and the country’s healthcare system’s inability to manage these illnesses in their early stages. The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) does not cover most terminal conditions, and public hospitals are often ill-equipped to treat such diseases.

Individuals like Uloma Joy, whose mother suffers from breast cancer, and Tunde Oseni, who cares for his ill sister, are forced to seek help from passers-by as they cannot afford treatment. These personal stories reflect the larger crisis many Nigerians face due to the lack of a robust healthcare system.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health has acknowledged the growing number of terminally ill patients seeking help on the streets. It has made efforts to address the issue through initiatives such as free medical outreaches and the Lagos Free Health Programme. However, the government’s assistance remains limited, and much more is needed to support those in desperate need.

The rise in terminal illnesses and the increasing number of patients begging for help should serve as a wake-up call for the Nigerian government to address healthcare deficiencies, create a sustainable social welfare system, and ensure that no Nigerian is left behind in the fight for survival.

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
