Umahi: CCTV Installed On Third Mainland Bridge To Deter Suicides, Illegal Sand Mining
Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos as part of efforts to enhance public safety and curb illegal activities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Umahi explained that the surveillance system was strategically deployed to deter suicide attempts and monitor illicit sand dredging activities under the bridge.
“We’ve installed CCTV cameras beneath the bridge deck, covering a 10-kilometre radius to detect any illegal sand excavation,” he stated. “An operations center has been set up near the shoreline, housing security personnel from the police, navy, army, and local forces, who monitor the footage in real-time.”
He emphasized that the technology would also help identify and prevent suicide attempts by allowing security operatives to intervene promptly.
Regarding the recent temporary closure and reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos, the minister clarified that the action was necessary due to a structural defect involving the approach slab. He noted that the original design was compromised due to sand erosion beneath the slab, and the cantilever design used was not suitable for that section.
On the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, Umahi reported steady progress, disclosing that 30 kilometers of the first section are expected to be completed and ready for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu on May 25, 2025.
“As of today, we have achieved about 15 kilometers of dual carriageway at the start of section one, and 5 kilometers at the Eleko end. By May 25, we aim to have 30 continuous kilometers available for the President to commission,” Umahi added.
