PDP Rejects Edo Tribunal’s Judgment, Vows to Appeal

Published

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has expressed dissatisfaction with the judgment delivered by the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which upheld the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued in Benin on Wednesday, Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, expressed the party’s firm disagreement with the tribunal’s decision. He asserted that the party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, was duly elected by the majority of voters and that the PDP had presented substantial evidence to support its claim of electoral malpractice.

Aziegbemi stated, “While we respect the judiciary, we completely disagree with the decision of the tribunal. We believe our candidate was duly elected by the majority of the voters. We are confident that we presented enough evidence to prove our case.”

The tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, dismissed the PDP’s petition on the grounds that the party failed to present sufficient evidence of over-voting and electoral non-compliance. The tribunal pointed out that the petitioners did not call polling unit agents or presiding officers as witnesses to substantiate the allegations.

Justice Kpochi noted, “The documents tendered from the bar by the petitioners were dumped on the tribunal without any competent witness to substantiate the claims of over-voting. The failure to call polling unit agents and registered voters is fatal to their case.”

Despite the ruling, the PDP has vowed to appeal the judgment. Aziegbemi called on party supporters to stay hopeful, emphasizing that the PDP would use all legal means to challenge the verdict, insisting that justice must prevail.

He concluded, “This is not the end of our struggle, but the beginning of a greater fight for justice and the people’s mandate. We are committed to exploring all available legal options to ensure the will of the people of Edo is upheld.”

Momodu had argued that a pairing of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi could perform strongly in the election, citing their past collaboration in 2019 and Obi’s 2023 electoral performance.

Responding, Tanko questioned the logic of choosing a candidate who might win a primary but lose the general election, insisting that the Obi–Kwankwaso combination would be more formidable.

He further warned that if the ADC fails to zone its presidential ticket to the South, the party risks losing the 2027 election.

Tanko maintained that with Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso on the same ticket, victory would be decisive and swift.
