15 Domestic Workers Allegedly Imprisoned by Patience Jonathan Since 2019

Former Nigerian First Lady, Patience Jonathan, is facing allegations of unlawfully keeping 15 of her domestic staff incarcerated since 2019. According to a report by SaharaReporters, the workers were allegedly imprisoned on accusations of robbery, with their trial continuously delayed on the instructions of the former First Lady. Sources claim that the current judge handling the case has been slow to act, allegedly under the influence of Mrs. Jonathan.

One source revealed that the workers were accused of stealing jewelry from one of the ex-First Lady’s apartments in Otuoke, despite not being present at the scene during the incident. Since then, no substantial evidence has been presented in court to support the charges, which include armed robbery, malicious damage, attempted murder, and theft.

A relative of one of the detained workers expressed frustration over the prolonged detention, stating that the workers, whose names include Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, and John Dashe, among others, have remained in prison for over five years without any concrete proof against them. Legal support was provided by TECH4JUSTICE, but progress has been hampered since the current Chief Judge took over the case.

The detained workers were reportedly scheduled for another court appearance on Thursday, but expectations remain low due to previous delays. The situation has sparked public outcry, with calls for justice and proper legal proceedings to ensure fair treatment for the detained staff.
