Delta Tricycle Operators Protest Against Sticker Price Hike
Commercial tricycle operators in Warri, Delta State, staged a protest against the hike in sticker prices allegedly enforced by hoodlums posing as government officials.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The protesters blocked major roads, causing disruption to the movement of residents, many of whom were forced to walk long distances as the tricycle operators refused to convey passengers.
Carrying placards with messages like “We nor go gree,” “Oborevwori, call your people to order,” and “Touts, stop extorting us,” the operators expressed frustration over the sudden increase in the sticker price from ₦3,000 to ₦12,000.
One of the tricycle operators, Efevogho, explained that the exorbitant fee is unaffordable considering their daily earnings. Another operator, Eguonoghene, called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene urgently.
In response, the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancement (ISRCA) also urged the Delta State Government to address the situation, emphasizing that the increased sticker fee adds to the hardship already faced by the operators due to economic challenges.
ISRCA’s National Coordinator, Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, called for the government to engage with the tricycle unions to reduce the sticker price and make transportation more affordable for residents.
The group highlighted that since the discontinuation of the Delta State Urban Mass Transit Scheme, introduced under former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, the government should take decisive action to support the livelihood of tricycle riders.
The operators and social rights group are calling for Governor Oborevwori’s intervention to prevent the situation from escalating further.
