Panic Strikes Uromi After Mob Justice and Police Action Force Residents to Flee

Governor Monday Okpebholo, who condemned the killings during a visit to Kano State, assured the victims’ families of justice and confirmed the arrest of 14 suspects. These suspects are set to be transferred to Abuja for further investigation. The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has also called for an independent judicial panel to probe the tragedy.
According to reports, many Uromi residents have ceased farming and are seeking refuge in neighboring towns due to fears of indiscriminate arrests and retaliation. One resident described the tension, recounting how a vigilante group, acting on a tip-off, confronted the travelers who were suspected of carrying weapons. The altercation escalated when one of the travelers drew a knife, leading to the mob attack.
Despite the tragic events, some locals argue that the victims were suspected kidnappers rather than hunters, as previously reported. However, they stress that mob justice is not acceptable. Some individuals, particularly youths, are fleeing the area, fearing they may be wrongly arrested as part of the crackdown.

For many residents, the violence reflects a broader sense of frustration with slow government action in the face of persistent insecurity. One woman shared the heartbreak of losing her brother to kidnappers after her family failed to raise a ransom, highlighting the deep-seated anger within the community.
