MRA Condemns Attack on Broadcast Journalist by Church Members in Port Harcourt
The Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has strongly condemned the brutal assault on Precious Amadi, a broadcast journalist based in Port Harcourt, by members of Salvation Ministries Church in Rivers State. Amadi, who had assisted in evacuating flammable items and tried to get the Rivers State Fire Service involved, was accused by church members of spying. This led to him being physically attacked under the supervision of some junior pastors. During the attack, Amadi’s two mobile phones were destroyed, and he was unlawfully detained for several hours. Additionally, the church members deleted his social media posts and wiped the data on his phones in an attempt to cover up the incident.
John Gbadamosi, MRA’s Programme Officer, condemned the act, calling it a serious violation of media freedom and human rights. He emphasized that journalists should never face violence or harassment for their work and urged the Federal Government and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
Gbadamosi also called on the leadership of Salvation Ministries to take immediate action, denounce the assault, and ensure justice for Amadi. He urged the church to educate its members on respecting journalists and upholding democratic values.
