The Nigerian Senate has announced that the consideration and passage of President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills will be a top priority once it resumes from recess on April 29.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The four crucial bills – the Nigerian Tax Bill, Tax Administration Bill, Revenue Tax Board Bill, and Nigerian Revenue Service Establishment Bill – were submitted by President Tinubu as part of his efforts to reform the country’s fiscal policies and improve revenue generation.

The delay in passing these bills has sparked concern, especially since the House of Representatives approved them two weeks earlier. This development has increased pressure on the Senate to take prompt action.

Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, had previously suggested that the bills might be passed before the lawmakers embarked on their break. However, the Senate proceeded on recess without addressing the matter, leading to speculation about potential obstacles.

A source within the legislative complex revealed that consultations are ongoing with northern senators to address amendments in the bills. The source expressed optimism that the issues would be resolved, particularly since the House of Representatives, previously perceived as an obstacle, had already approved the bills.

Enyinnaya Abaribe, Chairman of the South-East Senate Caucus, clarified that the delay resulted from the bills not being formally presented before the Senate’s closure. He assured that the bills would be prioritized once the legislative session resumes.

Similarly, Senator Osita Izunaso, representing Imo West, confirmed that the tax reform bills would be among the key issues addressed when the Senate reconvenes.

Lawmakers have reassured the public that the bills will be given due attention upon resumption, with the goal of advancing the nation’s tax policy framework and boosting revenue collection.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
