NAUS Demands Reversal of Telecom Tariff Hike, Threatens Student Protests
NAUS Calls for Reversal of Telecom Tariff Increase, Threatens Mobilization
The National Association of University Students (NAUS), South-West zone, has called on the Federal Government to urgently reverse the recent hike in telecommunication tariffs. The association warned that if the issue is not addressed, it would lead to mass mobilization of students throughout the region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During a press conference held in Lagos on Thursday, NAUS expressed strong opposition to the telecom tariff increase, emphasizing that it significantly hampers students’ ability to access vital educational resources. The association described affordable internet access as crucial for modern learning, especially as students increasingly rely on digital platforms for lectures, research, assignments, and academic discussions.
Speaking on behalf of NAUS, the National Vice President (South-West), Tiamiyu Olayinka, highlighted that the rise in telecom tariffs disrupts students’ academic activities. He called on the government to promptly address the situation to ensure that students continue to have affordable internet access, which is fundamental for academic success.
Olayinka stated, “Students across campuses depend on affordable internet access to attend virtual lectures, conduct research, submit assignments, and participate in online discussions. By increasing telecom tariffs, these critical academic engagements are being disrupted.”
Other Issues Raised by NAUS
Besides the telecom tariff hike, NAUS also pointed out several pressing issues that require immediate government intervention. These include increasing insecurity on campuses, frequent power outages, and recurring strikes that disrupt students’ academic progress.
NAUS warned that failure to resolve these challenges would force the student body to mobilize across the South-West to safeguard their rights and academic environment. Olayinka concluded by stating, “Failure to meet our demands will leave us with no choice but to mobilize students across the South-West to take a bold stand in defense of our rights and secure a better academic environment.”
