PDP Coalition and Atiku’s Aide Deny Allegations of Financial Support from Sanwo-Olu for 2023 Campaign
The Peoples Democratic Party Coalition (PDPCo), a non-profit organization affiliated with the PDP, has rejected reports claiming that Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, received financial support from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State to fund his campaign.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement, the group denounced the allegations as a smear campaign aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the former Vice President. It called on those making the accusations to publicly disclose their findings. The denial was also echoed by Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, in a statement issued on Thursday.
Dr. Emeka Kalu, National Coordinator of PDPCo, also challenged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which was reportedly involved in the matter, to present its evidence to the public.
Kalu emphasized that Atiku had no personal dealings with Governor Sanwo-Olu as alleged. He questioned how Sanwo-Olu, a key figure in President Bola Tinubu’s political camp, would have supported Atiku’s campaign. “I strongly condemn these baseless rumors targeting Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of accepting funds from Babajide Sanwo-Olu to support his presidential bid,” Kalu stated.
“It is absurd to suggest that Atiku would seek financial assistance from the Lagos State governor, especially in an election where Tinubu was aggressively determined to secure victory at any cost,” Kalu continued.
He further described the allegations as an extreme attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to fabricate false narratives against Atiku, a respected national figure who has no personal connection to Sanwo-Olu.
Kalu highlighted that Atiku’s political career has always been grounded in ethical principles, and he has never relied on improper financial support from government officials to fund his campaigns. He called for an end to character assassination efforts aimed at undermining Atiku’s values.
The PDPCo National Coordinator also remarked that the allegation was part of a broader attempt to discredit Atiku, noting that if not for the alleged election rigging, Atiku would have successfully revitalized the nation’s economy and restored Nigeria’s standing on the global stage.
Kalu affirmed that no amount of negative propaganda would derail Atiku’s ongoing mission to challenge the current administration’s poor governance, which has led to a collapse of the national economy. He stated that only a new administration could bring about meaningful recovery.
“Given Atiku’s unyielding determination, it’s clear that those attempting to smear his reputation have underestimated his resolve. He remains committed to fighting for a politically clean society for Nigeria’s people,” Kalu concluded.
The statement also called on the APC government to acknowledge its failures in governance, rather than shifting blame to Atiku, whose leadership qualities are widely regarded for their integrity and excellence.
