In support of this initiative, the government has inaugurated the Implementation Committee for the National Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector. The dialogue will bring together key stakeholders from both the health and power sectors to develop a strategic framework for ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply to public healthcare facilities.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Adekunle Salako, will oversee the event, which is expected to involve experts dedicated to solving power-related challenges in the healthcare sector. While the PPP framework is not yet fully implemented, Salako reassured that its adoption would not impact the affordability or quality of healthcare services.

Salako emphasized the urgency of tackling the energy issues in public hospitals, citing recent media reports on the critical power supply problems in institutions like UCH, LUTH, and AKTH. Despite previous efforts, such as a 50% electricity subsidy for public hospitals and solar mini-grid installations, these solutions have not fully resolved the energy deficit.

Salako called for a shift in the approach to power generation and supply, stressing the need for a whole-of-government strategy to address the broader energy challenges. He revealed that during his visits to federal hospitals, he encouraged medical directors to explore diverse PPP models and develop business cases to attract private investment in alternative and renewable energy solutions.

The minister also highlighted issues such as fire incidents, battery malfunctions, theft of energy infrastructure, and other maintenance challenges faced by hospitals that have attempted to implement alternative energy projects. He assured stakeholders that private sector investment would not lead to increased costs for accessing healthcare services.

The initiative is expected to lay the foundation for a more coordinated and sustainable approach to solving the energy challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

  • Surpassing Competitors: Speaking during an interview, Baba-Ahmed confidently stated that, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke outperforms all other presidential contenders currently in the political space.

  • Integrity and Capability: He described Duke as part of a visionary leadership blueprint aimed at thinking critically, restoring national dignity, exhibiting true integrity, and offering young Nigerians a leadership style they can genuinely look up to.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
