The deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has announced the cancellation of his planned Sallah durbar celebration, citing concerns over rising tensions in the state. In a televised address on Wednesday night, Bayero explained that he opted to forgo the event to maintain peace and prevent any potential unrest. He attributed his decision to guidance from esteemed religious leaders, appeals from elders, and deliberations with his advisory council.
“This is not a matter of life and death. If the celebration could lead to chaos, loss of lives, and destruction of property, then it is only right to step back,” he stated.
The former emir urged Kano residents to utilize the Sallah period to foster unity and strengthen family ties, emphasizing the importance of harmony in the state.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, has declared March 31 (Monday) and April 1 (Tuesday) as public holidays in commemoration of the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, conveyed the government’s message of goodwill, congratulating Muslims on the successful completion of Ramadan. He encouraged Nigerians to embrace the values of discipline, compassion, and generosity, underscoring the need for national unity and peaceful coexistence.
Tunji-Ojo further urged citizens to use the occasion to pray for the country’s peace, stability, and prosperity, while also reminding them to celebrate responsibly and extend acts of kindness to the less privileged.
“On behalf of the Federal Government, I wish all Muslim faithful a joyous Eid Mubarak. May the blessings of this season bring happiness, success, and fulfillment to all,” the statement read.
