During a press conference at the Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel in Lagos, the bank unveiled plans to raise fresh capital by April 2025 and expand its branch network from 38 to at least 100 locations by 2030. This bold initiative highlights Baobab Nigeria’s commitment to addressing financial gaps, fostering entrepreneurship, and supporting the country’s economic development.
The press event was attended by key stakeholders, including Baobab Group executives, regulatory bodies, industry leaders, and international partners. Discussions centered on financial inclusion, technological innovation, and sustainable economic growth, emphasizing Baobab’s role as a key driver of economic empowerment.
A Legacy of Financial Inclusion and Business Support
Since its inception, Baobab Nigeria has played a vital role in supporting Nigeria’s micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The bank has disbursed nearly ₦500 billion in loans, serving almost 300,000 clients and issuing close to half a million loans. This significant impact underscores Baobab’s dedication to fostering business growth, creating jobs, and strengthening communities.
Baobab’s mission is to provide accessible, reliable, and impactful financial services to underserved African communities. Speaking at the event, Philip Sigwart, Group CEO of Baobab Group, reiterated the company’s vision for expansion. He said, “At Baobab, we understand that small businesses are the backbone of Nigeria’s economy. Our goal is to create a sustainable, inclusive financial ecosystem that empowers entrepreneurs at every level.”
Capital Injection to Power Growth and Expansion
A major highlight of the event was Baobab’s announcement of a fresh capital injection. Although the exact amount is still under review, Sigwart emphasized that the capital increase would be substantial to support the bank’s aggressive growth plans.
“We are determining the precise amount, but it will be a significant boost to our operations. Our goal is to ensure compliance with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) regulations while having enough financial strength to support our expansion,” he explained. The first capital injection is expected in April 2025, with another planned within the year.
Baobab’s expansion plan is one of the most ambitious in Nigeria’s microfinance sector, aiming to triple its operational size and establish a strong presence across the country. “Currently, we operate 38 branches, but we plan to grow to at least 100 locations within five years, ensuring coverage in every region of Nigeria,” Sigwart added.
Sustainable Growth Strategy
Baobab Nigeria’s robust financial structure positions it for sustainable growth. As of December 2024, the bank’s Gross Loan Portfolio (GLP) stood at ₦60 billion, with a balance sheet size of ₦80 billion. These numbers reflect strong demand for Baobab’s financial products and its ability to scale operations efficiently.
Eric Ntumba, MD/CEO of Baobab Nigeria, emphasized the sustainability of the bank’s expansion strategy. “Our growth is well-planned and sustainable. We’ve maintained a low Portfolio at Risk while nearly doubling our loan portfolio in one year. At Baobab, we focus on the 3Ps—Planet, People, and Profit,” he stated.
Baobab’s long-term vision includes a ₦1 trillion balance sheet, with a tenfold increase within five years. “Although ambitious, we are confident it is achievable,” Ntumba said.
Bridging Financial Access Gaps
Baobab’s expansion aims to bridge significant financial access gaps in Nigeria. Approximately 300 local governments in the country lack financial institutions, and Baobab’s plan is to fill this gap by prioritizing underserved regions with limited or no access to banking services.
Ntumba added, “Even with 100 physical branches, our digital banking solutions will allow us to operate at the scale of 1,000 branches, making banking more accessible to remote communities.”
Staffing is also expected to increase significantly, with the workforce projected to double over the next five years. “While we won’t triple our workforce, we expect to see a nearly twofold increase. However, technology and automation will play a crucial role in enhancing efficiency,” Ntumba said.
A Commitment to Financial Inclusion and Economic Growth
Baobab Nigeria’s expansion strategy reflects its core mission to empower businesses and individuals by providing world-class financial services, especially in regions lacking access to banking institutions. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chairman of the Board of Baobab Nigeria, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to bridging financial gaps and driving economic transformation.
“Our goal is to reach all 36 states in Nigeria, prioritizing underserved regions,” Oyekanmi said. “Expanding our footprint to these areas is not just a business goal; it is a commitment to empowering millions of Nigerians.”
With its clear vision, solid track record, and innovative approach, Baobab Nigeria is poised to reshape the financial inclusion landscape in Nigeria. The fresh capital injection, expanding branch network, and focus on digital banking are all steps toward unlocking economic opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities across the nation.
