Tinubu Allocates ₦7 Billion for Travel Expenses in 2025
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to spend ₦6.1 billion on international travel in 2025, according to details from the approved national budget. Vice President Kashim Shettima is also projected to incur travel expenses amounting to ₦1.314 billion for international trips and ₦417.488 million for local travel during the same period.
The substantial allocation for travel expenses has sparked discussions, especially given Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges and limited revenue sources. Reports indicate that in 2024, the Tinubu administration spent approximately ₦36 billion on international travel alone. Data from the Open Treasury Portal revealed that the State House Headquarters allocated ₦12.2 billion for international travel and transport (training) and ₦24.19 billion for other international travel expenses, culminating in a total of ₦36.3 billion.
Similarly, significant funds were expended on local travel in 2024. The breakdown shows ₦15.8 billion for local travel and transport (training) and ₦31.2 billion for other local travel needs. This resulted in a cumulative travel expenditure of ₦83 billion for both domestic and international trips in 2024.
In defense of these expenses, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, emphasized the necessity of international engagements for economic development. During a live interview on Channels TV, he argued that President Tinubu’s overseas visits have yielded significant benefits, including securing $2 million in investments from Brazil to boost Nigeria’s livestock sector and address the herders-farmers crisis.
Additionally, data from the GovSpend platform, as cited by the BudgIT Foundation, shows that between February and July 2024, the Nigerian government spent ₦2.3 billion on international travel for President Tinubu. Payments recorded included ₦300 million in January, ₦250 million in February, and multiple disbursements exceeding ₦9 million in March.
Further expenditures in May and July 2024 saw the government allocate ₦350 million each month for foreign trips. In total, over ₦2.9 billion was spent on foreign exchange to facilitate travel for President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to countries such as Ethiopia, Switzerland, Liberia, France, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Despite concerns over these expenditures, government officials continue to justify them as crucial to fostering international partnerships and securing foreign investments for Nigeria.

At a ceremony attended by senior officers, the Managing Director of the Customs Technical Hangar Service, retired Comptroller of Customs Capt. Kuhi Mbaya, described the development as a landmark moment for the service.
He said Balogun’s transition from cabin crew to certified commercial pilot represents a major breakthrough for the Customs aviation unit and highlights the agency’s commitment to professional growth and inclusivity.
He added that the milestone reflects expanding opportunities within the Service as it continues to integrate air assets into its enforcement and border monitoring operations.
Balogun expressed gratitude for the support she received, noting that her journey required dedication and resilience, while pledging to apply her new skills in advancing the Customs mandate with professionalism and discipline.
The development has been widely described within the Service as an inspiration for greater female participation in technical and specialised roles.

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.
One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.
Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.
Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.
In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.
He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.
According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.
Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
