The clash stemmed from discussions about sexual allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during which Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi (Ebonyi North) and Ezekwesili engaged in a verbal confrontation.

At the Senate hearing, Ezekwesili reportedly told Nwaebonyi to “shut up,” prompting the senator to retaliate by calling her a “fool.” The former minister then described him as a “disgrace to the Senate,” while he, in turn, called her a “disgrace to womanhood.”

In a post on her (Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Senator Natasha praised Ezekwesili for her commitment to integrity and courage, acknowledging that she endured insults on behalf of women in leadership.

“Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Ma’am, I apologize for the insults. Know you took them for me… for us … as a mother and as a leader. Know that you are a true icon of integrity, courage, and visionary leadership. Your unwavering commitment to good governance, education, and democracy continues to inspire generations. A champion of accountability… Nigerians appreciate you. I celebrate your brilliance, resilience, and selfless service. You are a hero.”

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
