Ogun State Confirms Lassa Fever Outbreak, Reports First Fatality

The Ogun State government has confirmed an outbreak of Lassa Fever within the state, following the death of a 25-year-old female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member. Dr. Tomi Coker, the Ogun State Commissioner for Health, provided details of the symptoms of Lassa Fever, including high-grade fever, headache, body weakness, sore throat, muscle pain, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pain, and unexplained bleeding from various body openings. She urged residents to promptly report anyone exhibiting these symptoms to the nearest government health facility for immediate medical attention.

In her statement, Dr. Coker also advised healthcare workers to be vigilant and report suspected Lassa Fever cases to local health authorities. The Ogun State Government is actively collaborating with the Rapid Response Team in Ijebu North East to control the situation through enhanced surveillance, community engagement, and mobilization efforts. The Ministry of Health remains committed to safeguarding public health with a focused response to infectious diseases in the state.
