Major General Boniface Sinjen, Chief of Operations, emphasized the importance of the mission, highlighting that UN peacekeeping efforts go beyond military presence. They are aimed at promoting peace, diplomacy, and humanitarian support. Sinjen acknowledged the region’s fragile security situation, characterized by intercommunal conflicts, armed clashes, and humanitarian crises. He urged the troops to remain disciplined, impartial, and respectful of human dignity throughout their mission.
In his address, Sinjen also stressed the UN’s zero-tolerance policy on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), warning that any breach would lead to severe disciplinary measures. He encouraged the troops to work cohesively, remain vigilant, and uphold Nigeria’s esteemed reputation in peacekeeping operations.
Major General Ademola Adedoja, Commandant of the Peacekeeping Centre, commended the new batch of peacekeepers, noting that they continue Nigeria’s legacy of contributing to global peace and security. Since its establishment, the Peacekeeping Centre has trained over 100,000 peacekeepers who have served in various regions, including Liberia, Darfur, Sierra Leone, and Abyei.
The training program for the troops included medical screenings, UN peacekeeping principles, rules of engagement, international law, and specialized training in combat medic and armored vehicle operations. Experts from the German Training Advisory Group and the Nigerian Army School of Infantry provided hands-on training, preparing the troops for real-life scenarios.
Major General Adedoja expressed gratitude to Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff, for his commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s peacekeeping training programs. He assured that the troops are well-equipped to carry out their mandate effectively and represent Nigeria with honor.
This deployment further solidifies Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to maintaining international peace and stability, with the troops ready to make a significant impact in the Abyei region.
