Afenifere Calls for Sack of National Assembly Leadership Over Rivers State Emergency Rule
The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has demanded the resignation of the leadership of the National Assembly for failing to oppose President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. Afenifere described the declaration as despotic and unconstitutional, urging the National Assembly to act against it.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a communiqué issued at its monthly meeting in Ijebu-Ode, the group expressed disappointment that the National Assembly had not defended the democratic rights of Nigerians. Afenifere criticized the decision to replace a democratically elected administration with a military administrator, likening it to Nigeria’s undemocratic past.
Afenifere argued that the constitutional requirement for a two-thirds majority to approve such actions was ignored through a voice vote, which undermined democratic principles. The group urged for the leadership of the National Assembly to step down, emphasizing the need for decency, integrity, and respect for the separation of powers.
Afenifere also called for a broader movement to restore the rule of law and save Nigeria’s democracy, warning that without intervention, the nation could face undemocratic rule similar to historical dictatorships. The group further announced funeral arrangements for its late leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, and plans for a symposium in his honor.

WAUTI, which comprises National Tax Institutes/Associations from ECOWAS member states, is committed to enhancing tax professionalism, improving tax compliance, and streamlining tax administration within the region. With Nigeria at the helm, WAUTI aims to further its vision of harmonizing tax practices across West Africa, fostering a transparent and equitable taxation system that boosts economic growth and compliance.
In his acceptance speech, Agbeluyi expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the organization, vowing to collaborate closely with fellow executives and stakeholders to advance the Union’s objectives. He highlighted his commitment to working on regional partnerships that will support professionalism in the tax systems of WAUTI’s member states.
Agbeluyi’s vast experience, which includes serving as the Honorary Treasurer and 2nd Vice President of CITN, has positioned him well for this new role. He is also a distinguished member of various prestigious bodies, such as the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), and has earned numerous accolades in the field of taxation.
In addition to Agbeluyi’s election, other members of WAUTI’s Executive for the 2025-2027 tenure were also selected, including the re-election of Mr. Innocent Ohagwa, CITN’s current Vice President, as the Honorary Treasurer. This marks the beginning of a new era of regional cooperation in tax administration under Nigerian leadership.
