INEC Under Fire: Fubara Challenges Commission’s Neutrality Amid Rivers Assembly Turmoil

Speaking as a special guest at the sixth annual Freedom Online lecture, themed ‘Nigeria’s Socio-Political Challenges: Whose Fault, the Leaders or the Led?’, Fubara criticized INEC for applying the law selectively, particularly concerning lawmakers who switch parties after being elected.
“The constitution clearly states that lawmakers who defect from the party under which they were elected should lose their seats. However, INEC has failed to uphold this provision, raising concerns about its neutrality,” Fubara stated through his representative, former Rivers State Deputy Governor, Tele Ikuru.
He further warned that when institutions neglect their responsibilities, the rule of law weakens, ultimately threatening democracy.
Fubara’s remarks come amid ongoing controversy surrounding 27 lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023. The defectors, loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, switched allegiance at the height of the political rift between Wike and Fubara, leading to a factional split in the Assembly.
Despite calls for INEC to conduct by-elections to replace the defectors, the commission has maintained that the matter remains sub judice.
Aare Gani Adams Demands INEC Chairman’s Removal
Meanwhile, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has called for the immediate removal of INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, emphasizing the need for urgent electoral reforms.
Adams accused Yakubu of overseeing two flawed general elections and insisted that his continued leadership only serves the interests of politicians who manipulate the electoral process.
“For credible elections in Nigeria, we must demand the immediate removal of the current INEC chairman. I have no confidence in his ability to deliver fair elections,” Adams asserted.
He also pointed out that it is unprecedented for an INEC chairman to oversee three presidential elections, suggesting that his extended tenure might be serving ulterior political motives.

The former chairman of the Izzi Local Government Area reiterated his stance that Obi was deprived of victory in the 2023 presidential election. He noted that widespread dissatisfaction with the current economic climate has energized many Nigerians, particularly the youth and women, who are now more determined than ever to actively participate in and safeguard the electoral process.
Regarding the party’s strategy, Nwankwo emphasized the following:

He declared that “Obi’s anticipated victory will not be taken away again,” stressing that while he believes votes were stolen in 2023, the party is prepared to ensure votes are protected in 2027.

He explained that the current primary elections are critical for selecting candidates for various offices, including the Presidency, governorships, and seats in the National Assembly.

He concluded that the party is positioning itself to compete effectively at all levels, believing it has the capacity to garner significant support from Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a lengthy post on her account, the activist-turned-politician claimed the exercise was conducted behind closed doors, describing it as having a “predetermined outcome dressed in procedural formalities.” She further stated that after being “repeatedly postponed,” the election venue was “changed at the last minute.“
Aisha asserted that the party’s guidelines were not followed, lamenting that the process lacked justice and fairness.
She wrote, “A delegate-based process was introduced to be conducted at a central location, replacing the direct primaries that were supposed to be held at Local Government headquarters. When the moment came, the contest was not decided by delegates in the open; it was affirmed in a closed room, away from the people whose voices it was supposed to reflect.“
She continued, “The party will indeed go on to release numerous statements claiming the Abuja FCT primaries were free and fair. They are entitled to their voice, but the facts that transpired, when litigated by conscience and the guidelines of the Electoral Act, do not reflect justice and fairness.”
