Jonathan made these remarks on Tuesday at the book launch of former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, in Abuja.

He criticized the frequent deployment of military personnel for election duties, stating that it overstretches the armed forces and deviates from standard democratic practices observed in other nations.

According to him, for meaningful change to take place, Nigerian society must collectively reject bad political behavior.

“We, Nigerians, celebrate the wrong things. I believe that one day, the country will reach a point where people will reject bad behavior. The moment we all decide to stop accepting wrongdoing, the political class will be forced to act properly,” Jonathan stated.

He also suggested the establishment of a memorial in Abuja to showcase the names and pictures of individuals—both living and deceased—who have negatively impacted Nigeria’s governance. This, he said, would serve as a historical lesson for future generations.

On election security, Jonathan maintained that the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should handle elections, rather than involving the military.

Drawing comparisons with Botswana and Senegal, he explained that these nations conduct elections with minimal security interference, allowing voters to exercise their rights without intimidation.

“In most countries, the military does not oversee election management. Some governments use them to transport election materials in volatile areas, but they do not control polling stations or remain near voting booths as seen in Nigeria,” he noted.

He pointed to Botswana, where the military focuses solely on securing government assets, while elections are managed by the police. In Senegal, electoral officers oversee polling units, with police stationed outside, stepping in only when necessary.

The statement comes in response to reported moves to impeach Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

In a Friday release, the movement’s spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Saleh, described the development as troubling and urged political actors to avoid actions that could be perceived as politically motivated.

“The people of Kano are closely monitoring events, and there is growing concern that this impeachment attempt may be driven more by political considerations than by genuine constitutional necessity,” Saleh said.

He emphasized that while the constitution empowers lawmakers to hold public officials accountable, impeachment is one of the most serious legislative tools and must be exercised responsibly.

“Impeachment must never be reduced to a means of settling political disputes or rearranging political alliances. It should be guided strictly by justice, fairness, and the interests of the people,” he added.

Saleh also reminded the state leadership that the current administration came to power through the collective efforts and sacrifices of thousands of Kwankwasiyya supporters across Kano State.

“The victory that brought this government into office was not the achievement of any single individual. It resulted from the loyalty, unity, and sacrifices of Kwankwasiyya faithful across all 44 local governments in Kano State,” he said.

He cautioned that any perceived targeting of key administration figures could send the wrong signal to supporters who worked tirelessly to secure electoral success.

“Those in power must remember the collective struggle that made their victory possible. Political authority should never be exercised in ways that suggest abandoning the alliances and loyalties that built the movement,” Saleh added.

The movement further called on members of the Kano State House of Assembly to carry out their constitutional duties with independence, fairness, and accountability to the people.

“The authority of the Assembly comes directly from the electorate and must be exercised with wisdom, fairness, and a strong sense of responsibility,” he said.

Saleh warned that political actions perceived as persecution could escalate tensions in the state’s political environment.

“History shows that when political power is wielded in ways that appear unjust or vindictive, the people ultimately deliver their verdict through democratic means,” he noted.

He reaffirmed the movement’s commitment to peace, democratic stability, and the protection of the mandate given to the current administration by Kano citizens.

“At this critical moment, all political actors must exercise restraint and wisdom, remembering the sacrifices of the millions whose collective efforts brought this government into office,” the statement concluded.

A senior refinery official confirmed the increase on Friday night, noting that the new price reflects shifts in global oil market fundamentals.

“Yes, the price has been reviewed. The new gantry price is now ₦995 per litre,” the official told The PUNCH on condition of anonymity.

The revised rate follows an earlier increase from ₦774 to ₦874 per litre earlier this week, meaning the refinery’s petrol price has jumped from ₦774 to ₦995 per litre within four days.

Checks on petroleumprice.ng also confirmed that the updated gantry price had been reflected on the platform.

Industry experts warn that the hike could lead to further increases in retail pump prices across Nigeria, with estimates suggesting petrol may sell for over ₦1,050 per litre in some areas, depending on transport costs and marketers’ margins.

The increase came after a brief suspension of petrol loading operations at the refinery on Friday. Sources said truck-out activities were halted around 2:00 a.m., leaving depot owners and bulk marketers uncertain about the refinery’s next pricing move. Market observers note that such pauses in loading often precede price adjustments.

Refinery officials have consistently defended their pricing approach, emphasizing that petrol prices reflect global market conditions. In a statement issued on Thursday, the company explained that adjustments are influenced by international crude prices, logistics costs, and operational realities, stressing that prices are not set arbitrarily.

The refinery also highlighted that Nigeria has fully transitioned to a deregulated downstream petroleum market, where prices are largely determined by global crude oil rates, foreign exchange fluctuations, and supply dynamics. The company said it has absorbed roughly 20% of rising costs to reduce pressure on the domestic market.

Meanwhile, data from the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) shows that imported petrol remains cheaper than locally refined products. According to MEMAN, Dangote’s petrol gantry price previously stood at ₦874 per litre, while the landing cost of imported petrol was ₦809.37 per litre—about ₦64 cheaper.
