Prime Minister Plenković Refuses To Congratulate Milanović After Landslide Win

His rival, Dragan Primorac, who was supported by the ruling center-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), received only 25 percent of the vote, marking the party’s worst performance in history.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković refrained from congratulating Milanović, instead dismissing the re-elected president as offering “nothing.”
Milanović, however, extended a gesture of reconciliation, stating he would “offer a hand” to the prime minister despite their political differences.
Although the Croatian presidency is largely ceremonial, requiring the president to serve as a non-partisan figurehead, Milanović has consistently criticized the governing HDZ, particularly on issues such as corruption, inflation, and healthcare.
While condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Milanović has also expressed strong disapproval of Western military aid to Kyiv, a stance that has sparked both domestic and international debate.
Before becoming president, Milanović served as Croatia’s prime minister from 2011 to 2016 and led the center-left Social Democratic Party (SDP) from 2007 to 2016.
Last year, he controversially announced plans to run for prime minister during the country’s parliamentary elections, a move deemed unconstitutional by the courts. He accused the judiciary of being influenced by the HDZ, which he called a “gangster clique.”
The HDZ, which has dominated Croatian politics since the country’s independence, now faces significant challenges after Primorac’s crushing defeat, a result that reflects rising discontent with the party and its leadership under Prime Minister Plenković.
