Published

on

A consulting firm focused on African affairs, SBM Intelligence, has highlighted eight areas in Nigeria that pose significant security risks. These regions include Port Harcourt, Lagos, Maiduguri, Jos, Calabar, Kano, Eleme Junction in Rivers State, and Onitsha.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

SBM’s analysis draws attention to key urban areas and vital transportation routes that are highly vulnerable to crime, including theft, assaults, and other security threats. The report sheds light on the nation’s security situation and provides valuable insight into areas most at risk.

Port Harcourt tops the list with 85 reported incidents, mainly involving violent crimes like armed robbery and kidnapping. Maiduguri follows closely with 52 incidents, mostly attributed to ongoing insurgent activities. Lagos, one of the country’s largest cities, reported 32 incidents, predominantly urban crimes in densely populated areas.

Additionally, the Makurdi-Jos route has been flagged due to violence from youth gangs and conflicts between farmers and herders, often leading to roadblocks and assaults on travelers. Jos, Calabar, and Kano each recorded between 18 and 23 incidents, primarily linked to communal violence and urban theft.

Eleme Junction in Rivers State, a major transport hub, saw 16 incidents, while Onitsha’s bustling trade routes were associated with 15 theft-related offenses.

The report also notes the increased danger along the Port Harcourt-Warri route, now considered more perilous than the Abuja-Kaduna highway, due to a surge in kidnapping for ransom incidents.

A survey accompanying the report highlighted that 84.6% of respondents had either directly encountered or heard about security incidents while traveling. Only 42% of those surveyed considered roads somewhat safe, with a mere 2.4% rating them as very safe.

The survey also pointed out infrastructural issues like potholes, poor drainage, and heavy traffic, all contributing to travel hazards. It calls for more robust security measures and better road maintenance to ensure safer travel across the country.

These findings emphasize the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address these security challenges and improve road safety in Nigeria.
