Nigeria’s Hunger Crisis Highlighted As Archbishop Kaigama Reflects On December Stampede
The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama, has stated that it would be unfair to blame the church for the tragic stampede that occurred during a rice distribution event in December 2024. The incident, which took place on December 21 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, led to the deaths of 10 people.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In his homily at a special memorial service for the victims, Archbishop Kaigama explained that the root cause of the tragedy lies in the severe economic hardship caused by government policies, which have undermined the dignity of many citizens. He firmly asserted that the Church was not to blame for the crowd management issues.
“The people came not because of any negligence on our part, but because they were hungry,” Kaigama said. “Their hunger is not the fault of the Catholic Church. If you are looking for someone to blame, it should not be the Church.”
The Archbishop emphasized that no Nigerian should have to struggle for food and called for government action to alleviate the widespread hardship. He described it as shameful that people died simply trying to meet their basic needs.
“Isn’t it a national disgrace that we might one day say people died just trying to get food? This is a shame to Nigeria. And when the international community hears about it, they will wonder what is happening in a country with such vast human and natural resources,” he added.
