Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has stated that the National Grid will continue to face collapses until repairs are made to the Ugwachi-Bauchi-Makurdi line. Adelabu pointed out that the inability to fix this crucial line is putting significant strain on the existing infrastructure, leading to the fragility of the grid.

The Minister also emphasized that the grid is outdated and in dire need of a complete overhaul to enhance its efficiency.

While denying claims that the National Grid collapsed 12 times in 2024, he clarified that there were only 8 instances, with 5 being full collapses and 3 partial. During a session defending his ministry’s 2025 budget before the Senate Committee on Power, Adelabu shared that the grid’s collapses were mainly due to generation issues (3 instances), as well as vandalism (2 instances).

He also discussed the current state of critical lines, like the Shiroro-Mando-Kaduna line, which remains unrepaired due to ongoing insecurity in the region.

Regarding the 2024 budget, the Minister reported a 50-55% achievement and expressed hopes to reach 80% performance by June 2025. He also justified the 2025 budget proposal, highlighting the need for more funds, particularly for agencies like the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to help them fulfill their responsibilities.

Adelabu called attention to the lack of funding for TCN, despite the ongoing challenges with grid instability, and requested appropriations to support the completion of more than 100 TCN projects that are currently incomplete. Additionally, he outlined plans to allocate N25 billion for ongoing projects, strengthen grid stability, and improve the distribution network.

The Ministry is also focused on rural electrification, with plans to provide solar energy solutions in areas lacking grid access. An N30 billion budget has been allocated to the Renewed Hope Light Up Rural Areas program, which will focus on renewable energy distribution and rural street lighting.

Adelabu concluded by emphasizing the importance of public education on power infrastructure, stressing that power assets are national resources that should be protected by all.
