However, Sani pointed out that the political tension surrounding Obasa’s reported gubernatorial ambitions—particularly his clash with Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu—may have contributed to the decision.
In a post shared on X, Sani suggested that Obasa’s possible involvement with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s political opponents could have played a significant role. He listed several factors that could have contributed to the Speaker’s removal, drawing from past experiences in 1999, including:
- Suspicion of the Speaker plotting an impeachment.
- Growing independence from the Governor’s influence.
- Failing to adequately support fellow Assembly members.
- Delaying or obstructing important bills favored by the Governor.
- Alleged collusion with the Governor’s political rivals.
As the political drama unfolded, heavy security was deployed around the Lagos State House of Assembly, coinciding with speculation about Obasa’s potential bid for the 2027 gubernatorial elections.

The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.
