In a statement released by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, on Sunday, it was revealed that the vigilantes had been fleeing from Gidan Makera in the Boko district of Zurmi Local Council when the tragedy occurred.
Initially, the NAF had denied that the airstrike affected any civilians, but an investigation will be conducted into the reported civilian casualties.
Despite the tragic loss, Governor Lawal praised the military’s efforts to combat banditry and terrorism in the state. He highlighted the successful precision strikes carried out by the air component of Operation Hadarin Daji over the weekend in the Maradun and Zurmi Local Councils, which had severely weakened the operational capabilities of the bandits.
Lawal emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between state and federal security agencies in addressing the security challenges facing Zamfara. He assured the people of Zamfara that the state government remains committed to supporting these efforts.
The Governor also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged the communities to continue supporting the military’s efforts to end banditry. He underscored that achieving peace in Zamfara would ensure long-term development.
While reaffirming the government’s commitment to aiding the NAF and other security agencies, Lawal urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. He called for unity in the fight against banditry to bring lasting peace to the state.
