Dolapo Bright, former Special Adviser on Agriculture to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision to suspend duties, tariffs, and taxes on food imports, calling the advice misleading and counterproductive.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Bright, speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources, argued that rising diesel and petrol costs—essential for transporting food—are the real culprits behind inflation, not import taxes. He stated, “The person who advised the government on this policy clearly lacks understanding. Transporting imported food across states adds costs, making the policy ineffective and detrimental to local agriculture.”

Despite the Tinubu administration’s announcement of duty suspensions in July 2024, the policy has reportedly stalled due to bureaucratic delays. Bright emphasized the importance of creating an enabling environment for farmers, asserting that government intervention often stifles agricultural progress.

“The high cost of inputs, including fuel, has reduced farmers’ productivity,” he added, urging the government to support private sector-led initiatives rather than micromanaging the agricultural sector.

INEC said the adjustment complies with Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires that campaigns end 24 hours before election day.
