Released Activist Mahdi Shehu Reflects On His Time In Detention And Acknowledges Public Reaction

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, Shehu expressed gratitude towards both his supporters and those who were indifferent or critical of his situation during his 12-day detention.
Shehu had been arrested for sharing a misleading video on social media, which falsely claimed that French military forces had bases in Nigeria. Authorities argued that the video could potentially incite tensions and endanger national security. However, he was granted bail by the Kaduna State High Court on Thursday.
While thanking his supporters for their prayers, concern, and solidarity, Shehu also extended thanks to his critics and those who remained neutral.
“During my arrest, detention, and 12-day incarceration, I feel a duty to thank the following groups of people,” Shehu wrote.
“To those who genuinely expressed worry, support, and prayers, your kindness was felt and made a difference.
“To those who celebrated my arrest, I thank you for the strength and perspective your actions gave me.
“To those who remained indifferent—silent and unmoved—I acknowledge your neutrality. One day, you may find yourselves standing either as victims or villains.”
Shehu also apologized for not being able to respond to the over 4 million messages he received across various social media platforms during his detention.
