Speaking at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day service in Ado Ekiti, the Governor, represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, honored the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation. He urged Nigerians to continue supporting the military and the families of war veterans, emphasizing that the efforts of the military were pivotal in preserving national security.
Governor Oyebanji also expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for appointing an Ekiti son, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, to the esteemed position of Chief of Army Staff. He called on public and private sectors to extend their support to veterans and their families throughout the year, highlighting the importance of a secure environment for national development.
In his remarks, Major General Obinna Godwin Onubogu, General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, praised the unwavering support from all levels of government in the battle against criminal elements. The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.
