Born to Chief and Lolo Augustine Umeugo, Dr. Umeugo hails from Ijele Obodoukwu in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State. He is the founder and CEO of Guarantee Group of Companies and Hypertek Projects Ltd.
Dr. Umeugo began his education at Shell Camp Primary School in Owerri, Imo State, from 1984 to 1989, and then attended Marist Academy in Uturu Okigwe for his secondary education from 1989 to 1994. Driven by ambition, he entered the private sector with the goal of reaching the top of the business world. In 2000, he founded Guarantee Group of Companies, marking the beginning of his successful entrepreneurial journey. In 2014, he was honored with an Honorary Doctorate from Commonwealth University London, cementing his status as a global figure.
As a philanthropist, Dr. Umeugo has generously given back to society. His first major project was the construction of 15 kilometers of high-quality asphalt roads in his hometown of Obodoukwu, Imo State, a project whose first phase has been completed. This initiative, among others, has endeared him to the people of Obodoukwu, where he is regarded as one of the community’s most beloved sons.
Dr. Umeugo’s actions speak volumes about his character—constantly striving to make those around him feel valued and appreciated. His philanthropic work has not only benefited the development of Obodoukwu but also improved the lives of many within the community. He has provided 50 motorcycles and 10 shuttle buses to local residents and awarded over 100 scholarships to children in the area, leaving a lasting legacy of generosity and leadership.

The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.

Suspicious Circumstances: Raising questions about the sudden deaths, Nasera noted that the detainees had eaten well the day before, speculating that heat exposure or some form of administered substance may have been involved.
