Benue Health Insurance Scheme Now Covers 6,273 IDPs Amid Ongoing Displacement Crisis

During a meeting with a UN delegation led by IOM Chief of Mission Paola Pace and the Head of the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), Alexandre Castellano, in Makurdi, Alia expressed concern over the ongoing insecurity in the state. He highlighted the continuous attacks and displacement crisis in Benue, a region known as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” which has led to the displacement of 1.5 million people across 26 camps.
Alia explained that the displaced population faces significant challenges, including inadequate shelter, limited access to clean water, poor healthcare, and the absence of effective protection measures. He noted that these hardships have resulted in harmful coping mechanisms, such as early marriages, transactional activities, and reduced food intake, with women, children, and persons with disabilities being the most affected.
The governor also shared that his administration is supporting host communities with resources and services to ease the pressure from the influx of displaced individuals. Over 5,000 Civil Protection Guards are deployed, working alongside security agencies to ensure safety.
Alia expressed optimism that the ongoing discussions with the UN and partners would lead to strategies that uplift both the displaced and host communities. Additionally, he emphasized that his administration is committed to addressing the root causes of displacement and attacks, promoting sustainable solutions for the people. He also announced that efforts are underway to provide displaced persons and host communities with agricultural support, training, and resources to ensure food security and foster economic independence.
