The governor raised the issue during the launch of the third tranche of a ₦5 billion payment aimed at clearing the backlog of retirees’ gratuities and death benefits at the Government House.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, Governor Yusuf expressed sympathy for the affected pensioners, many of whom endured significant hardships and delays in receiving their entitlements.
“This neglect has caused untold suffering and led to the loss of lives among retirees who waited in vain for their rightful dues,” Yusuf said. “This is the most significant social security crisis since Kano’s creation in 1967.”
He noted that his administration has so far disbursed ₦16 billion to 6,886 retirees in three installments. The first tranche of ₦6 billion was paid to 2,667 retirees, followed by a ₦5 billion second tranche for 2,216 pensioners. The third tranche, also ₦5 billion, will benefit 2,000 retirees.
Yusuf emphasized transparency in the payment process, ensuring that beneficiaries receive funds directly through electronic bank transfers.
“Our commitment to resolving this issue is not just a financial obligation but a moral imperative,” Yusuf added. He reiterated that development should prioritize the welfare of citizens, including access to essential services like education and healthcare.
