Labour Party Seeks Court Order To Declare Defected Lawmakers’ Seats Vacant

Published

on

The Labour Party (LP) has expressed frustration over its difficulty in serving court papers to six House of Representatives members who defected from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). LP is seeking a court order to declare their seats vacant and reclaim any salaries and allowances they have earned as lawmakers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking with Punch on Thursday, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, and National Youth Leader, Kennedy Ahanotu, revealed that the defectors have been evading service of court documents. They said multiple attempts had been made to serve the papers but had been unsuccessful.

“We have tried several times to serve them court papers, but they continue to evade service. We may have no choice but to involve the Clerk of the National Assembly and publish their names in national newspapers,” Ifoh said.

The defectors include Ajang Iliya (Jos South/Jos East, Plateau), Tochukwu Okere (Imo), Donatus Mathew (Kaduna), Bassey Akiba (Cross River), Iyawe Esosa (Edo), and Daulyop Fom (Plateau). Iliya, who defected in December 2024, cited internal crises within the LP and the need to align with President Bola Tinubu’s policies as his reasons for joining the APC.

Despite the defections, LP leadership dismissed the lawmakers as “paper-weight politicians,” insisting their departure would not affect the party’s base.

“We’ve won similar cases in the past, and they’re wasting their time in the APC. Most of them won’t return to the National Assembly, and those who do will be very few,” Ifoh said.

Though critical, LP indicated openness to welcoming the defectors back on strict terms. “In politics, you don’t close your doors, but it will be on our terms,” Ifoh added.

Kennedy Ahanotu also expressed frustration with the delays caused by the defectors, blaming inefficiencies in the judicial system for the prolonged process. He urged for a swift resolution to defection cases to ensure accountability and the swift election of true party representatives.

“If the justice system functioned efficiently, defection cases could be resolved in two to three months, leading to a re-run for representatives who genuinely serve the party and the people,” Ahanotu concluded.
