Reno Omokri Reflects On Gaddafi’s Failed Attempt To Bring Weapons Into Nigeria

In a post on his X handle, Omokri shared two separate incidents where Nigerian authorities asserted their authority over Gaddafi’s armed entourage. He first recalled the 2000 African Heads of Government Summit on Roll Back Malaria, where Gaddafi’s female bodyguards were disarmed at gunpoint before being allowed into the venue in Abuja.
The second, more dramatic incident occurred in November 2006 during the Africa-South America Summit. Gaddafi arrived with five planes, carrying 50 cars full of weapons. Nigerian officials at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport insisted that the weapons remain on the planes, while the Nigerian Army ensured their return.
Omokri used these incidents to underscore Nigeria’s regional influence, contrasting it with Ghana’s handling of a similar breach. He recounted how Fani-Kayode, who had been tasked with receiving Gaddafi, handled the situation diplomatically but resolutely, ensuring the weapons were returned to the planes.
Omokri further detailed that Gaddafi’s aides resorted to spiritual rituals, spilling blood in front of the guest house where Gaddafi stayed, symbolizing his anger at the restrictions. Omokri criticized the recent actions of the Burkina Faso junta leader, highlighting the difference in how Nigeria, under Obasanjo’s leadership, maintained its sovereignty.
