Federal High Court To Hear Case Against Police Escorts For VIPs
Colleen Yesufu, a 79-year-old businesswoman, has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging the assignment of police officers as escorts to private citizens. The suit seeks to compel the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to withdraw such officers and calls for a perpetual injunction preventing their reassignment to individuals without statutory entitlement.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The respondents in the case, including President Bola Tinubu, the IGP, the National Police Council, the Nigerian Police Force, and Mrs. Bikikisu Aliyu (also known as Rebecca Omokamo Godwin Isaac), are required to respond to the allegations.
Yesufu’s suit questions the legality of the IGP’s decision to provide police escorts to Aliyu and other private individuals, contrary to a directive issued by President Tinubu in November 2023. This directive ordered the withdrawal of police escorts from private citizens not entitled to them under the law.
Yesufu claims Aliyu has misused police escorts to evade investigations by agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and has used them to intimidate her.
The plaintiff is seeking:
- A declaration affirming the validity of President Tinubu’s directive.
- An order directing the IGP to withdraw VIP police escorts assigned to individuals like Aliyu.
- A permanent injunction barring the IGP from reassigning such escorts.
As of now, the case awaits assignment to a judge for further proceedings.
