Legal Breaches Prompted Yar’Adua To Cancel Controversial Port Harcourt Refinery Deal, Says Falana

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has revealed that former President Umaru Yar’Adua halted the sale of the Port Harcourt Refinery to a consortium led by Aliko Dangote due to procedural violations. Falana stated that the deal did not adhere to due process, leading to its cancellation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In an interview with Channels Television, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had mentioned that the consortium offered $750 million in 2007 to manage both the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries, but the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) rejected the offer. Obasanjo also noted that Shell Petroleum Development Company raised concerns over potential corruption that could hinder the refinery’s operation.

Falana clarified that the sale reversal was necessary to address legal and ethical concerns and to safeguard Nigeria’s national interests. He emphasized that, under the Privatisation and Commercialisation Act, the Vice President is supposed to chair the National Council on Privatisation, which oversees the privatisation process. Falana accused Obasanjo of bypassing this rule by directly managing the sale of state-owned enterprises, including the refinery, sidelining then-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The lawyer further noted that the consortium involved in the transaction included Bluestar Oil, with partners such as Dangote Oil, Zenon Oil, and Transcorp. Falana criticized the deal, stating that the sales were completed in the final days of Obasanjo’s administration and were mired in questions about their legality and morality. Unions like the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria also raised concerns about the deal and its fairness to the nation, leading to a four-day strike in June 2007.

Makinde made the prediction after Mohammed was introduced at the gathering and described as an incoming senator.

Speaking at the event, the APM presidential candidate said, “Well, APM is going to win this election overwhelmingly because this is the reset agenda being put before Nigerians, so I dare to say that my national leader is the incoming Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Makinde also discussed the qualities he believes Nigerians should consider when choosing their next president, arguing that physical energy and the ability to tackle national challenges should take precedence over age.

According to him, the next president must possess the stamina to work long hours and respond effectively to the country’s pressing problems.

He stated, “While I will not make age an issue in this campaign, I will make energy, having energy, being able to stay up late to deal with the challenges we face as a country.”

Makinde further challenged presidential candidates to demonstrate their physical fitness, urging voters to consider their capacity to handle the demands of the presidency.

“So please, when they bring their presidential candidates, let the candidates be able to jump, and if they can do that, vote for them,” he added.
