NLC Presses For Wage Review And Implementation of Minimum Wage Act This Year

In a New Year message to Nigerians, the NLC urged all levels of government to prioritize citizens’ welfare in 2025. The proposed Tax Reform Bills have faced widespread opposition, particularly from the northern regions, with critics arguing that they could harm economic growth. NLC President Joe Ajaero stressed the necessity of inclusive dialogue in shaping tax policies. He urged the government to withdraw the current bills and ensure that all key stakeholders are involved in the process. Ajaero’s message, titled “In 2025, Hope is in Our Collective Resolve,” called on citizens to come together and build a stronger, more prosperous nation. He also highlighted the importance of policies that reflect transparency, honesty, and inclusivity, without resorting to nepotism or coercion. The NLC also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that government policies contribute to national development. As part of this, the congress is organizing a national dialogue in Ibadan in January 2025 to collaboratively create a new tax law that will be more widely accepted. The NLC also called for governments to adhere to the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and engage in wage reviews to improve workers’ welfare in light of recent economic challenges. In closing, the NLC urged the federal government to respect agreements with trade unions, focus on policies that promote human progress, and cease using violence in dealing with workers. The labor group remains committed to ensuring that government actions lead to a more inclusive, progressive, and prosperous Nigeria. The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.

Suspicious Circumstances: Raising questions about the sudden deaths, Nasera noted that the detainees had eaten well the day before, speculating that heat exposure or some form of administered substance may have been involved.
