Military Responds to Amnesty’s Allegations Over Accidental Strikes, Urges Investigation Cooperation

Amnesty International called for an investigation and accountability for the actions of the military, while the Nigerian military accused the organization of ignoring its invitations to address the accusations. The incident, which occurred on December 25, targeted terrorist groups in Sokoto State but tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 10 villagers in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame LGA. Amnesty International claimed that this brings the total number of civilian deaths from accidental strikes to 436 over the past eight years. Amnesty International’s Nigeria Country Director, Isa Sanusi, condemned the air strikes, accusing the military of attempting to cover up the deaths and calling for an independent investigation by the Attorney-General’s office. In response, Defence Media Operations Director Edward Buba stated that the military would cooperate with the investigation only once Amnesty International accepted the invitation extended to them to address their allegations. The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.
