Published

Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, has sounded an alarm about the increasing tribal rhetoric in Nigerian politics, warning that it could push the country into turmoil. Speaking to the press in Abeokuta, Sowunmi called on political leaders, particularly those from Nigeria’s various geopolitical zones, to engage with the government in a responsible and constructive manner that supports democratic values.

He said, “This nation has never been in a more fragile state since 1914. Under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, the issues confronting Nigeria are threatening the very idea of the nation. The rise of tribal politics, regional divisions, global economic pressures, and challenges in governance have placed the country in a precarious position.”

Sowunmi also warned that leaders at all levels—national, state, and local government—must approach governance with an understanding of the challenges they inherit and work within their capacities to address them. He argued that past leaders governed to the best of their abilities, and to effectively engage with the current government, Nigerians must acknowledge the complex reality the administration faces.

He further urged President Tinubu to restructure his “South West-dominated” economic team, calling for a more balanced approach to key appointments to alleviate national tensions. “It is crucial for Nigerians to explore alternative ways of doing things, alternative approaches to democracy, and a new way of engaging in discourse to preserve the unity we have built over the years,” Sowunmi added.
