Gusau Optimistic About Super Eagles’ World Cup Qualification Despite Tough Start

In a statement detailing his vision for the future, Gusau acknowledged the team’s struggles but emphasized his belief in their ability to turn things around. He pointed to the Super Eagles’ near-success at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where they narrowly missed the title, as a source of inspiration.
Gusau reaffirmed the goal of winning the six remaining qualifying matches, stressing that achieving automatic World Cup qualification is still within reach. He also highlighted the importance of securing a World Cup spot for both the team’s confidence and their momentum heading into the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
Despite a promising start in 2024, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up in AFCON, their qualification campaign has been disappointing. The team has struggled with draws and a defeat to Benin Republic, leaving them four points behind the leaders in Group C.
Following the setback against Benin Republic and the subsequent departure of head coach Finidi George, NFF Technical Director Austin Eguavoen has taken over as interim coach. The Super Eagles will next face crucial matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March 2025 as they aim to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
