Farotimi Laments Nigeria’s Decline, Calls It An ‘Evil Empire
Human rights activist, Dele Farotimi, expressed deep sorrow on Sunday, stating that Nigerians have become victims in the very country they helped create. Describing Nigeria as an “evil empire,” Farotimi lamented the intolerable economic conditions the nation faces, which he believes have made the country uninhabitable. “We have become victims in the country we built. I have always said this—people are fleeing because we have created a place unfit for human existence,” he remarked, wiping tears away. He further emphasized that due to collective tolerance, the nation had been lost, and the people had become slaves. Farotimi also highlighted the importance of unity in confronting oppression. “You found your voices, I became you. Together, we couldn’t be silenced,” he said. Farotimi’s comments come after his release from an Ekiti State prison, where he had been detained since December 3, 2024, on charges of defamation and cyberbullying. These charges were brought against him by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Aare Afe Babalola, over allegations of defamation in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.

Suspicious Circumstances: Raising questions about the sudden deaths, Nasera noted that the detainees had eaten well the day before, speculating that heat exposure or some form of administered substance may have been involved.
