Tedros Thanks Colleagues After Narrowly Escaping Israeli Strikes On Yemen Airport

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus revealed that he narrowly escaped death during Israeli airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport in Yemen, which is under the control of Huthi rebels. Speaking to BBC Radio, Tedros recounted the terrifying experience as he was preparing to board a flight during the attack on Thursday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He stressed the significance of respecting international laws designed to protect civilian infrastructure in conflict zones.

The Israeli military had targeted what it described as “rebel military sites” in Yemen, marking the second airstrike since December 19, following missile launches from Yemeni rebels aimed at Israel.

Tedros recalled the explosion: “We heard a loud explosion nearby, followed by more blasts. The sound was deafening, and my ear still rings from it even after more than 24 hours. The explosion hit the departure lounge next to us, and later, the control tower.” He described the scene as chaotic, with people running in all directions, completely exposed. He added, “It was sheer luck. If the missile had veered slightly, it could have struck us. My colleague said we narrowly escaped death.”

The strikes resulted in four deaths and 20 injuries, according to Huthi Deputy Transport Minister Yahya al-Sayani.

Tedros was in Yemen on a mission for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, focusing on addressing the humanitarian crisis, assessing the health situation, and advocating for the release of detained UN staff.

When asked whether Israel knew he was at the airport, Tedros replied, “Our flights and activities are internationally known, so I assume those who need to know, know. But it’s better to ask Israel about that.” Regardless of his presence, he emphasized that civilian facilities must be protected under international law. “Whether they knew or not doesn’t matter… international law must be respected.”

At the time of the strike, the airport was hosting civilian flights, and the departure lounge was filled with non-combatants, with civilian aircraft on the tarmac.

Tedros later shared footage of the attack on X (formerly Twitter), expressing gratitude to airport staff and colleagues who shielded him during the strike. He and his team were evacuated to Jordan. In his post, Tedros expressed solidarity with those enduring the daily dangers of the ongoing conflict: “My heart goes out to our colleagues on the front lines and to the civilians facing such peril every day.
