Obi made this statement in a post on his X account following his visit to the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Onitsha on Christmas Day. During his visit, Obi expressed his support for empowering inmates through skills training, which would better prepare them for productive lives after incarceration.
He shared, “In line with my policy of celebrating with the marginalized during festive seasons, I spent Christmas at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Onitsha, where I joined the Archbishop of Onitsha and Grand Patron of Nigerian Correctional Centres to interact with inmates undergoing rehabilitation.”
Obi was impressed by the operational Skill Acquisition Centre at the facility, which, thanks to Archbishop Okeke’s efforts, is providing inmates with various skills. He also highlighted that inmates now have the opportunity to sit for the National Business and Technical Examinations Board exams at the center, and the National Open University of Nigeria has established a study center there.
“Education is a vital tool for national development, and I commend the establishment of these educational facilities,” Obi stated. He extended his gratitude to Archbishop Valerian Okeke for his continuous support and contributions. Obi urged the government to replicate such positive initiatives in other correctional centers, which would significantly enhance the rehabilitation of incarcerated youths, preparing them for more constructive lives and enabling them to contribute to societal growth.
