Netflix Re-Strategizing in Nigeria, AY Makun Blames Low Subscribers and Shared Accounts
Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has shared his perspective on the recent controversy surrounding Netflix’s alleged decision to halt funding for Nigerian original films.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a recent interview with Nollywood on Radio, AY addressed the concerns sparked by Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, who revealed that Netflix had stopped commissioning Nigerian content. This move raised questions about the streaming giant’s commitment to the Nigerian market.
However, AY clarified that Netflix is not exiting Nigeria but is likely re-evaluating its approach due to financial concerns. He explained that Netflix’s spending in Nigeria has far outpaced its earnings, primarily due to widespread subscription sharing and low subscription rates in the country.
With a population of over 200 million, Nigeria has fewer than 300,000 Netflix subscribers, according to AY. This stark contrast suggests that many Nigerians are accessing Netflix through shared accounts instead of purchasing individual subscriptions.
“I recently had a meeting with Netflix, and there was no mention of them leaving Nigeria,” AY shared. “We discussed my next project, and how they could be involved. I don’t believe they’re leaving the country. But if you’re spending more than you’re making, you’d need to reconsider your strategy. That’s what’s happening with their structure.”
He continued, “The issue isn’t just with the filmmakers; it’s about us as Nigerians. With a population of over 200 million, having only about 300,000 subscribers indicates that there’s a leak in the system. People are sharing subscriptions, which is the real issue.”
AY emphasized that the situation is a result of broader challenges, rather than solely the filmmakers’ efforts.
