A group of aviation regulatory bodies recently visited the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, situated along the Ilisan-Iperu axis in Ogun State, and officially certified it for commercial use, praising its facilities and level of completion.
The visiting agencies, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), all agreed that the airport meets global standards and represents a source of pride for Ogun State.
The agencies highlighted key infrastructure at the airport, such as the Control Tower, Weather Monitoring Areas, Runway, Fire Service Stations, and the Apron, emphasizing that these facilities are comparable to any of their kind internationally, positioning the airport as one of the best in the West African region.
Ango Mohammed, the Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards at NCAA, who was present during the visit, acknowledged the significant improvements in the airport’s facilities since his previous visit, noting that it now matches the quality found at top-tier airports worldwide.
Tayo John, representing NAMA’s Managing Director, added that the inspection was to ensure the airport’s compliance with air traffic services and safety standards.
The Senior Project Manager of Craneburg, the construction company overseeing the project, Nicolas Mfarrej, reported that the airport is approximately 98% complete and ready to begin serving the state’s needs.
Engineer Oluwole Adeyileka, Consultant on regulatory matters to the Ogun State Governor, expressed satisfaction with the progress made and emphasized that the agencies’ positive assessment indicates the state’s readiness for full-scale airport operations.
In their remarks, both the Manager of Gateway International Airport, Captain Dapo Olumide, and Ogun State’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engineer Ade Akinsanya, noted that this final assessment marks the last step toward the airport’s full commercial operation, signifying Ogun State’s commitment to becoming a leader in air traffic services in Nigeria.
