The Federal Government has outlined how it is utilizing the funds saved from the removal of fuel subsidies, directing them into critical projects and reforms aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, shared the details at the 2024 Annual Conference of the International Press Institute in Abuja.

Idris explained that these funds are being used for a range of initiatives, including student loans, infrastructure development, agricultural production, digital projects, and social investments aimed at supporting citizens and promoting sustainable growth.

Energy Transition and Job Creation

A major initiative, according to Idris, is Nigeria’s transition from fossil fuels to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for vehicles and machinery. This energy shift is expected to reduce transportation costs by up to 60%, while creating new employment opportunities and attracting both local and foreign investments.

He stated, “President Tinubu is leading Nigeria into an energy transition, with CNG now being promoted as an alternative fuel. This is not only reducing transportation costs but also generating millions of dollars in investments.”

Education Reform and Student Loans

Another key area of focus is education. The government introduced the Student Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act 2024, establishing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to help students access affordable higher education. The government has allocated N110 billion for tuition fees for 120,000 students at public tertiary institutions.

Consumer Credit and Economic Empowerment

The government has also launched a consumer credit scheme aimed at making locally-produced goods more accessible to Nigerians on credit. Civil servants are the first beneficiaries, with 500,000 set to gain access to this initiative. Additionally, the establishment of a Consumer Credit Corporation will provide flexible, low-cost loans to Nigerians.

Idris remarked, “The President is focused on increasing the financial well-being of Nigerians and ensuring long-term prosperity.”

Economic Reform and Tax Restructuring

Idris emphasized that subsidy removal is part of broader economic reforms aimed at reducing inefficiencies and diversifying the economy. The government is also working on simplifying the tax system to encourage compliance, with new tax exemptions aimed at benefiting vulnerable groups.

Media Freedom and Civic Space Protection

On media freedom, Idris reiterated the government’s commitment to a free press, acknowledging the challenges but highlighting the continued openness in Nigeria’s media landscape. He stressed that the press must exercise its freedom responsibly, balancing rights with duties.

Judicial Reforms and Accountability

Lastly, Idris spoke on judicial reforms, which aim to strengthen fundamental rights and ensure fairness in Nigeria’s legal system. He called on the media to foster healthy debates and ensure public officials are held accountable while respecting democratic principles.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.
