Oshiomhole Rebukes Ethnic Bias, Calls For Constructive Debate On Tax Reforms
Adams Oshiomhole, Edo North Senator and former Governor of Edo State, has urged governors opposing the new tax bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu to engage in discussions rather than outright rejection. The tax reform bills, introduced by the Tinubu administration, have sparked significant debate, with many stakeholders, including 36 state governors under the National Economic Council (NEC), expressing strong opposition. The 19 northern governors have been particularly vocal, rejecting parts of the bills and calling for their withdrawal from the National Assembly. They argue that the reforms could exacerbate economic inequalities and negatively impact their regions.
In response to the governors’ opposition, Oshiomhole stated, “If you withdraw it, you close the debate. It’s better debated at public hearings. We are making these laws for the Nigerian people, and it is the people who should constructively evaluate if it’s in their interest. In the real world, nobody gets everything they want; it’s about negotiation, especially in a democracy.”
He also cautioned against allowing ethnic and religious divides to dominate the debate, stressing that this undermines truth and reason. Oshiomhole rejected claims that the bills would disproportionately benefit one region over another.
The lawmaker emphasized that a society can be transformed through either resolutions or reforms, adding that the president has the authority to propose tax reforms. However, he noted that the president should not expect the bills to return from the National Assembly exactly as they were presented.
He added, “I am not a stammerer, and debate is for those who can argue. That’s what the parliament is for. The president has sent proposals, not a law, for us to review, discuss, debate, and, if necessary, negotiate and amend. I would be surprised if the president expects the bills to return to him exactly as presented. Even the Appropriation Act is never returned in its original form. It would be a sad day for democracy if the National Assembly simply accepts whatever bill the executive sends and returns it unchanged.”
