Police’s Failed Attempt To Arrest Journalist Over Defamation Sparks Outrage In Umuahia
A journalist and former Deputy Chairman of Bende LGA, Promise Uzoma Okoro, narrowly avoided arrest by officers from the Nigeria Police Force’s FCID, Abuja, who attempted to take him to the capital over allegations of defamation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Okoro, who currently serves as Chairman of the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OPMAN) in Abia State, was targeted for arrest over the weekend. The police intended to bring him to Abuja in connection with claims that he had published defamatory content about an individual.
However, the arrest attempt was thwarted thanks to the intervention of Abia State’s Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, and OMPAN members, who successfully stopped the Abuja police from taking him.
Speaking out on the incident, Okoro expressed his astonishment that no prior notice had been given to him by the officers before they arrived in Umuahia. He accused his detractors of trying to use the police to falsely imprison him and described the event as a continuation of a recent failed spiritual attack on his life.
“Police came all the way from Abuja to Umuahia to arrest me for alleged defamation without any prior invitation. Any attempt to intimidate me using security forces will fail,” Okoro declared.
He thanked Commissioner Danladi Isa and Abia State Police Spokesperson, ASP Maureen Chinaka, for their professionalism and adherence to the rule of law. Okoro also warned against any actions that could jeopardize the positive relationship between the media and the police.
In response to the attempted arrest, OMPAN members in Abia State accompanied Okoro to the Police Command headquarters in Umuahia on Monday to formally report the conduct of the officers from Abuja.

Court Sentences Man to Four Years for ₦16 Million Money Laundering, Forfeits G-Wagon
A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
A Delta State High Court has handed down death sentences to two individuals for their involvement in the 2018 killing of Delta State University (DELSU) undergraduate Elozino Ogege, following a ruling that found them guilty. Meanwhile, a third co-defendant facing charges related to the same incident was discharged and acquitted.
