The Nigerian Presidency has refuted claims that France is poised to take control of Nigeria’s mining sector, including solid minerals and security rights, following President Bola Tinubu’s recent trip to France.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

During this state visit, Nigeria and France signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering joint projects that will advance and diversify the critical minerals value chains in both nations’ solid minerals sectors.

The MOU has sparked online speculation regarding France’s intentions regarding Nigeria’s mining landscape. However, Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, clarified in a statement on social media that Nigeria has not relinquished its mining rights.

Dare emphasized that the agreement focuses on collaboration to enhance and diversify the critical minerals value chain, which includes valuable resources like copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements crucial for clean energy technologies.

According to Dare, the MOU will facilitate the remediation of over 2,000 abandoned mining sites across Nigeria, contributing to environmental rehabilitation and post-mining initiatives. The statement highlighted that the French involvement does not imply any encroachment on Nigeria’s economic and security interests.

“The French are not taking over. Nowhere in the document was it agreed or implied that Nigeria has signed away its mining rights. The agreement aims to promote sustainable mining practices and establish joint projects for extracting and processing critical minerals, backed by both public and private funding,” the statement stressed.

Furthermore, the MOU outlines commitments to adopting international best practices in executing programs that ensure transparency and improve the living conditions of communities affected by mining activities.

Through ongoing training, seminars, and collaborative events, stakeholders in the critical metals sector are expected to enhance their capacity in managing the sector’s value chain.

The presidency, however, confirmed that President Talon is safe and that loyalist forces are restoring order. Authorities described the coup attempt as the work of “a small group” with limited reach, adding that the city and the country remain secure.

Regional bloc ECOWAS has condemned the attempted takeover, describing it as a serious and unacceptable challenge to the democratic will of the people. In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commission called for strict adherence to the country’s Constitution and praised the efforts of the government and the Republican Army in regaining control. ECOWAS warned that the plot’s leaders would be held accountable for any loss of life or property arising from their actions and reaffirmed its full support for Benin, including potential deployment of the regional standby force if necessary.

Separately, Atiku’s Senior Political Assistant, Olarenwaju, attributed the former Vice President’s actions against Jonathan in 2015 to a breach of a gentleman’s agreement. Speaking during an Space discussion titled “APC Must Go,” Olarenwaju explained that his alignment with Atiku was motivated by a broader vision for Nigeria’s progress. He said, “Most of the answers I’m going to give tonight are not just based on my deliberations with Atiku, they are based on my desire for a better Nigeria. At the end of the day, if Nigeria is better, my life is better and easier as a Nigerian. So I only find myself with Atiku; in 2015, I didn’t find myself with Atiku, I found myself on the side of Goodluck Jonathan.”
